Before European exploration, the Tequesta Native American tribe inhabited the region now known as Parkland. Although 16th-century Spanish explorers charted much of Florida, Parkland remained largely untouched for many subsequent centuries.

However, on February 14, 2018, Parkland faced an unprecedented crisis. A devastating shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School resulted in the loss of seventeen lives.
